**OREM, Utah** — Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot during a student-sponsored event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10, 2025, in an attack that stunned the political world and the campus community.
Kirk, 31, was speaking outdoors before a crowd of about 3,000 when gunfire erupted around 12:20 p.m. Mountain Time. Utah officials said he was shot during the event and taken to Timpanogos Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The FBI and the Utah Department of Public Safety opened a major investigation.
What had been a political discussion on a college campus turned quickly into panic. Witnesses said people scattered as officers moved to secure the area and determine where the shot had come from.

Kirk had built Turning Point USA into a major conservative youth organization and became a familiar presence on college campuses. His events often focused on politics, free speech and exchanges with students who disagreed with him. He left behind his wife, Erika Kirk, their children, relatives, colleagues and supporters. Students and others who were at the university event were also left shaken after being caught in a sudden act of deadly violence.
