WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has declared the conflict with Iran “over” after saying he canceled additional U.S. military strikes following what he described as an understanding with Tehran to abandon efforts to develop nuclear weapons.
Trump made the announcement during a tele-rally supporting Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones’ gubernatorial campaign, saying the nuclear issue had been the central objective of the conflict.
“I don’t know if you heard, but we ended the war with Iran today,” Trump said.
According to Trump, Iran had agreed to permanently give up nuclear weapons. He also said the U.S. naval blockade around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz would remain until a formal agreement was completed.
The president suggested representatives could meet in Switzerland to finalize the terms, with a possible signing expected during the weekend.
