WASHINGTON — A security emergency at the Washington Hilton on April 25 erupted into gunfire as an armed man allegedly rushed a security checkpoint during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, forcing the evacuation of President Donald Trump and other senior officials.
Federal prosecutors identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California. According to a Justice Department indictment, Allen approached a Secret Service screening area shortly after 8:30 p.m., ran through a magnetometer and headed toward the stairs leading to the ballroom where Trump was located.
🚨 Gunfire Erupts During Security Breach
Prosecutors allege Allen was armed with a Mossberg Maverick 88 12-gauge shotgun and fired as he attempted to breach the security area. A Secret Service officer was struck in the chest, but the officer’s protective vest stopped the round. The officer returned fire, striking no one, and Allen was subsequently restrained and arrested.
Allen was carrying additional weapons and ammunition, including a handgun, two knives, several daggers and multiple rounds of ammunition, according to the indictment. He suffered a minor knee injury during the confrontation.
Trump was unharmed and was quickly escorted from the stage. Vice President JD Vance and other senior officials were also evacuated as law enforcement secured the hotel. The dinner was canceled following the incident.
⚖️ Federal Case Moves Forward
The Justice Department later charged Allen with attempting to assassinate Trump, assaulting a federal officer with a deadly weapon, transporting a firearm and ammunition across state lines with intent to commit a felony, and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.
Allen pleaded not guilty to the charges in May, according to Associated Press reporting.
Prosecutors have also described writings and other evidence they say indicate that senior Trump administration officials were targeted. Those allegations remain part of the government’s case and will be tested through the federal court process.
