ARABIAN SEA — A tense confrontation between U.S. and Iranian forces in the Arabian Sea reportedly escalated into an exchange of gunfire and missile strikes after an Iranian vessel approached the USS Abraham Lincoln at close range, according to two U.S. officials briefed on the incident.
The officials, who spoke to CBS News on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the operation publicly, said a U.S. Navy ship opened fire using a 5-inch Mark 45 naval gun. The weapon is a standard deck gun carried by several classes of American surface warships.

According to the officials, the initial gunfire missed the Iranian vessel several times. It remains unclear whether those rounds were intended as warning shots or were fired with the intention of disabling the ship.
The confrontation then intensified when a U.S. military helicopter armed with Hellfire missiles was launched. The officials said the helicopter struck the Iranian vessel twice.
The identity of the U.S. warship that fired the Mark 45 gun has not been publicly disclosed. The type of helicopter involved also remains unclear. Navy MH-60R Seahawk helicopters and Marine Corps AH-1Z Vipers are both capable of carrying Hellfire missiles.
The condition of the Iranian vessel and the status of its crew were not immediately known.

U.S. Central Command, which oversees American military operations in the region, declined to provide details to CBS News. A defense official told the network, “We have nothing for you on this.”
