LOS ANGELES — Bruce Willis built a career on something Hollywood once rarely allowed its action stars to show: vulnerability.
With his trademark humor, understated confidence and ability to portray characters who could be hurt, frightened and overwhelmed, Willis helped redefine the modern movie hero. His performances turned ordinary men facing extraordinary circumstances into some of cinema’s most memorable characters.
Today, Willis lives with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a progressive neurological disorder affecting areas of the brain associated with language, behavior and other functions. His family first announced in 2022 that he was stepping away from acting after he was diagnosed with aphasia. In February 2023, they announced that his condition had progressed to FTD.
The diagnosis brought renewed attention to a career spanning decades and featuring some of Hollywood’s most recognizable films.

Willis first became a household name through the television series Moonlighting, where he played private investigator David Addison. His quick wit and chemistry with co-star Cybill Shepherd established the combination of humor and vulnerability that would become central to his screen persona.
That formula reached another level with John McClane in Die Hard.
McClane was not an untouchable superhero. He was an ordinary police officer caught in an extraordinary crisis, separated from his wife and forced to confront heavily armed criminals with limited resources.

In Unbreakable, Willis portrayed David Dunn, a subdued man confronting the possibility that he possesses extraordinary abilities.
His filmography also included 12 Monkeys, The Fifth Element, Armageddon, Looper, Sin City and Death Becomes Her, among many others.

His family has used his public diagnosis to increase awareness of frontotemporal dementia and emphasize compassion for people living with the condition and the families caring for them.

His career demonstrated that strength on screen did not require perfection.
