KYIV — Ukraine is expanding its long-range drone campaign against targets inside Russia, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warns that growing drone activity could create serious risks for commercial aviation and further transform Russian airspace into a new front in the war.
In a Sept. 1 address, Zelenskyy warned airlines, insurers and international aviation authorities that Russian airspace could effectively become increasingly difficult to operate in as Ukrainian drones penetrate deeper into Russian territory. He said Ukraine’s strikes are focused on Russian military capabilities and economic infrastructure supporting the war effort, while emphasizing that civilian aircraft are not intended targets.
The warning follows repeated disruptions at Russian airports linked to drone activity. Russian authorities have maintained that their aviation system remains under control and that flights can operate safely, rejecting Kyiv’s broader assessment of the risks.
Meanwhile, the war continues to intensify on the ground and in the air. Russia has carried out large-scale missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure. On Sept. 12, Ukrainian officials reported civilian deaths and dozens of injuries across multiple regions following another major wave of Russian strikes. Kyiv also said hundreds of drones were involved in the latest barrage.
Ukraine has responded with increasingly long-range attacks inside Russia, targeting facilities it says contribute to Moscow’s military-industrial capacity. The expanding reach of Ukrainian drones has pushed the conflict farther from the traditional battlefield, bringing military activity closer to major Russian cities, infrastructure and aviation routes.
Zelenskyy has also connected Ukraine’s drone campaign to diplomatic efforts. He has indicated that Kyiv could consider temporary pauses in certain operations if international partners request them as part of negotiations aimed at ending the conflict.
Diplomatic activity has continued alongside the fighting. U.S. envoys have held discussions with officials in both Moscow and Kyiv as efforts continue to revive trilateral negotiations. Ukrainian officials have suggested talks could resume in October, although major differences between the two sides remain unresolved.
For now, neither military operations nor diplomacy has produced a decisive breakthrough. As Ukraine expands its ability to strike deep inside Russia and Moscow continues attacking Ukrainian territory, the skies over the region are becoming an increasingly important and dangerous dimension of the war — with potential consequences extending well beyond the battlefield.
