WASHINGTON — An evening built around political satire, journalism and high-profile Washington networking turned into a security emergency Saturday night when an armed suspect charged through a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton, sending the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner into chaos and prompting the evacuation of President Donald Trump and other senior officials.
Federal prosecutors identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California. According to the Justice Department, Allen allegedly ran through a magnetometer near the ballroom while carrying a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun and a .38-caliber pistol. Prosecutors also said he had multiple knives in his possession.
The incident unfolded as hundreds of journalists, political figures and guests gathered for the annual dinner. Trump was inside the ballroom when the security breach occurred. Secret Service personnel responded immediately, and the president, first lady Melania Trump and other officials were escorted from the area.
According to federal court documents, a Secret Service officer was struck once in the chest while wearing a ballistic vest. The officer’s protective equipment prevented a serious injury, and the officer was later released from the hospital. Allen was arrested at the scene after being tackled and was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The Justice Department has charged Allen with attempting to assassinate the president, transporting a firearm and ammunition across state lines with intent to commit a felony, and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. Prosecutors allege that his actions were directed toward the area where Trump and other administration officials were gathered.
🚨 Rapid Secret Service Response
Authorities have emphasized that multiple layers of security were in place around the event. The suspect was believed to have been a guest at the hotel, which investigators say allowed him to reach an area closer to the event before encountering the security checkpoint. The Secret Service maintained additional protective measures around the president inside the ballroom.
Investigators are continuing to examine surveillance footage, ballistic evidence and Allen’s movements before the attack. Video reviewed by The Washington Post shows Allen moving through the checkpoint with the shotgun while a Secret Service officer responds with gunfire. Questions surrounding exactly which weapon fired the round that struck the officer have also been examined as part of the investigation.
The dinner itself was ultimately canceled after the security incident. Trump and other attendees were evacuated while law enforcement secured the hotel and investigated the scene.
The motive and full circumstances surrounding the alleged attack remain subject to the federal investigation and court proceedings.
What began as one of Washington’s most recognizable annual political gatherings instead became a major security incident, placing renewed attention on the challenges of protecting a president and senior government officials at large public events.
