BEIT SHEMESH, Israel — A direct Iranian ballistic missile strike tore through a residential neighborhood in Beit Shemesh on March 1, killing nine people and injuring more than 40 others in one of the deadliest attacks on Israeli civilians during the conflict.
The missile struck the central Israeli city west of Jerusalem shortly after warning sirens sounded. The impact destroyed a synagogue, heavily damaged a public bomb shelter beneath it and caused extensive destruction to surrounding homes and buildings.
Emergency crews rushed into the neighborhood as thick dust, shattered concrete and twisted metal covered the streets. Magen David Adom initially reported eight deaths and transported 28 injured people to hospitals before a ninth fatality was confirmed. Hospitals in Jerusalem and the surrounding area treated victims, including children.
Missile Slams Into Residential Area
The force of the impact left a large section of the neighborhood severely damaged. Search-and-rescue teams, police, soldiers and medical personnel worked through the wreckage as they searched for survivors and recovered victims.
The Israel Defense Forces said the failure to intercept the missile was under investigation. Air-defense systems had been activated, but the missile nevertheless reached the area and struck with an estimated 500-kilogram warhead. The Home Front Command was also examining the condition and integrity of the shelter that sustained the impact.
Initial comments from local police suggested that several victims may have been inside the public shelter. Later reporting indicated that the circumstances varied among the victims, underscoring the complexity of the rescue operation and the ongoing investigation.
Nine Lives Lost
Authorities later identified all nine victims. They included three teenage siblings — Yaakov Biton, 16, Avigail Biton, 15, and Sara Biton, 13 — as well as 16-year-old Gavriel Baruch Ravach. Other victims included mother and daughter Ronit and Sara Elimelech, mother and son Bruria and Yosef Cohen, and 46-year-old Oren Katz.
The deaths left families and the wider Beit Shemesh community mourning as funerals were held under the continuing threat of additional missile fire.
A Community Left Reeling
Residents described a neighborhood transformed in moments from an ordinary residential area into a scene of destruction. Buildings were damaged, windows shattered and streets filled with debris as emergency personnel continued their work.
The strike also intensified questions surrounding Israel’s missile-defense systems and the protection offered by civilian shelters. Officials emphasized that residents should continue following Home Front Command instructions and immediately seek designated protected areas when sirens sound.
The Beit Shemesh attack came amid a broader escalation between Israel and Iran, with ballistic-missile launches and military operations placing civilians across the region under repeated threat.
For the families who lost loved ones, however, the wider conflict was reduced to a deeply personal tragedy. Nine people were killed in a single strike, leaving relatives, friends and an entire community to confront the loss while authorities continue investigating how the missile penetrated the defenses and what happened at the impact site.
