PHILADELPHIA — Ashley Biden, the youngest daughter of former President Joe Biden, filed for divorce from her husband, Dr. Howard Krein, after more than 13 years of marriage, according to Philadelphia court records and reporting by the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Biden, 44, filed the divorce paperwork in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas on August 11, 2025. She and Krein, a physician and professor, married in June 2012 in Greenville, Delaware, after being introduced through Biden’s late brother, Beau Biden.
💔 Divorce Filing Draws Public Attention
The circumstances behind the couple’s separation have not been publicly disclosed. Philadelphia divorce records generally provide limited public information about the reasons for a marriage ending.
The filing received additional attention after Ashley Biden posted on social media around the same time. Reports said she shared an image of herself walking through a park along with messages referring to freedom, new beginnings and personal boundaries. Some of the posts were later deleted.
Despite being the daughter of a former president and former first lady, Biden has largely maintained a private public profile. She made a notable public appearance at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, where she introduced her father.
The divorce filing itself does not establish any connection to political events involving her father.

Separately, former President Joe Biden has faced continued political scrutiny over the use of an autopen to reproduce his signature on presidential documents, including pardons and clemency actions issued near the end of his administration.
The Republican-led House Oversight Committee investigated the matter and released a report in October 2025 alleging that some executive actions may have lacked sufficient documentation showing direct presidential authorization. Committee Chairman James Comer referred the findings to the Justice Department.
Democratic committee staff disputed those conclusions, saying witnesses testified that Biden authorized the executive actions and that investigators had not established that the autopen was used without his knowledge or authorization.
The issue later moved into the criminal-investigation arena. In March 2026, CBS News reported that federal prosecutors in Washington had closed a probe into whether Biden and his aides unlawfully used the autopen, after prosecutors reportedly concluded they could not identify a viable legal basis for charges.

The autopen controversy also renewed attention to questions surrounding Biden’s memory that emerged during Special Counsel Robert Hur’s 2024 investigation into his handling of classified documents.
Hur concluded that criminal charges were not warranted, but his report described instances in which Biden had difficulty recalling certain dates and periods of his life. The findings subsequently became part of the broader political debate over Biden’s age and fitness for office.
Biden rejected the characterization of his memory and defended his handling of the investigation.
