OREM, Utah — Conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during a campus speaking event at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025, in an attack that immediately drew national attention and renewed concerns about political violence and security at public events.
Kirk, 31, was participating in a student question-and-answer session when a gunman fired from a nearby rooftop, striking him in the neck. He was transported to Timpanogos Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to Utah authorities.
The shooting occurred during Kirk’s “American Comeback Tour,” which brought him to college campuses for political discussions and debates. Approximately 3,000 people were attending the event at UVU, according to the Utah Department of Public Safety.
🎯 Gunfire Erupts During Campus Event
The attack unfolded shortly after Kirk began answering questions from students. Witnesses described a sudden burst of panic as attendees rushed for cover following the gunshot.
Investigators determined that the shooter had positioned himself on the roof of a university building overlooking the outdoor event. The FBI later released video showing the suspect leaving the rooftop after the shooting. Investigators also recovered a rifle and ammunition in a wooded area and collected physical evidence from the rooftop.
Authorities initially detained several people during the investigation, but those individuals were released after investigators determined they were not responsible for the killing. A nationwide manhunt followed before authorities identified and arrested Tyler Robinson.

The investigation has since developed into a major criminal case. Prosecutors charged Robinson with aggravated murder and additional offenses connected to Kirk’s death. The aggravated-murder charge is a capital felony under Utah law and can carry the death penalty or other lengthy prison sentences if there is a conviction.
Robinson has pleaded not guilty. In September 2026, a Utah judge ruled that prosecutors had presented sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial, leaving the possibility of a death sentence if Robinson is ultimately convicted of the capital charge. The defense disputes aspects of the prosecution’s evidence and arguments concerning motive and whether the legal requirements for a capital case have been met.

The case now moves toward the next stages of the judicial process, with the accused presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. The proceedings are expected to remain closely watched as prosecutors and defense attorneys prepare for trial.
