ARABIAN SEA — The U.S. Navy has ended an intensive search for a sailor who disappeared after an MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter made an emergency landing in the Arabian Sea, concluding a more than four-day operation that covered thousands of square miles of open water.
According to the Navy, search crews spent more than 102 hours combing an area of approximately 14,000 square miles in an effort to locate the missing service member. U.S. Navy and Air Force aircraft and maritime forces participated in the operation, but the sailor was not recovered.
Four other crew members survived the incident and were rescued. Three were reported to be in stable condition aboard the USS George H.W. Bush, the aircraft carrier from which the helicopter had been operating. Three of the survivors sustained injuries during the emergency landing and were treated following the incident.
The Navy has withheld the missing sailor’s identity pending notification of the service member’s family.

The U.S. 5th Fleet said the search was conducted as an extensive, coordinated operation across the Arabian Sea within the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.
Search crews operated continuously across a vast section of ocean, using aircraft and surface vessels to scan the water for any possible sign of the missing sailor.
Despite the scale of the response, authorities ultimately ended the search without locating the service member.
For the sailor’s family and fellow crew members, the decision marks a devastating conclusion to an operation that had continued around the clock for more than four days.
Military officials have not released a definitive explanation for what forced the helicopter to make the emergency landing. The Navy has said there is no indication at this time that hostile action caused the incident, while an investigation continues.
