DOJ Investigates Financial Ties Surrounding E. Jean Carroll Litigation
The Justice Department has opened an investigation into circumstances surrounding the financing of E. Jean Carroll’s legal battle against President Donald Trump, including a nonprofit linked to billionaire Democratic donor and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, according to reports.
The investigation has drawn renewed attention to Carroll’s testimony about the financial support she received during litigation against Trump and to Hoffman’s involvement in funding her legal team.
Carroll won two civil cases against Trump in 2023 and 2024. Juries awarded her a combined $88 million in damages stemming from allegations of sexual abuse and defamation. Trump has consistently denied Carroll’s allegations and has challenged the legal findings.
According to reports, federal prosecutors in Illinois are examining matters related to Carroll’s deposition and potential perjury issues. A source familiar with the investigation told reporters that Carroll is not currently the focus of the probe.
Instead, investigators are primarily examining American Future Republic, a nonprofit funded by Hoffman. The Washington Times reported that the organization paid approximately $7 million to Carroll’s law firm in 2020.
The financial relationship has come under scrutiny because Carroll previously testified that she did not remember Hoffman helping finance at least one of her lawsuits against Trump. During a CNN appearance in May 2023, she was asked about the issue and said she had “completely forgot” about Hoffman’s involvement.
The investigation has prompted a sharp political backlash. Critics of the Carroll litigation argue that Hoffman’s financial support deserves greater scrutiny given his longstanding opposition to Trump and his substantial political spending against the former president.
Hoffman has been a major Democratic donor and has supported efforts opposing Trump in multiple presidential election cycles. During the 2024 campaign, campaign-finance records showed Hoffman contributing at least $1 million to the Biden Victory Fund and $10 million to Future Forward, according to published reports. He also gave millions to Republican Accountability PAC, an organization critical of Trump.
Supporters of Carroll, however, have condemned the Justice Department investigation as politically motivated. They argue that scrutinizing a woman who prevailed before civil juries represents an inappropriate use of federal authority and could have a chilling effect on future victims seeking legal remedies.
The probe comes as federal investigators continue examining a range of politically sensitive matters connected to the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election and other disputes involving Trump and his political opponents.
For now, the investigation remains focused on questions surrounding financial disclosures, testimony and the nonprofit’s role in financing Carroll’s litigation. Whether prosecutors ultimately bring charges or take further action remains uncertain.
The case is likely to remain politically contentious, particularly because it involves a prominent Trump opponent, a high-profile civil judgment and one of the Democratic Party’s most influential political donors.
