The U.S. Navy has concluded a multi-day search-and-rescue operation for a missing crew member after an MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter made an emergency landing in the Arabian Sea, officials announced.
The sailor, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was not recovered. Four other crew members were rescued from the water and survived. The search lasted more than 102 hours and covered more than 14,000 square miles of open ocean in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.
The helicopter, assigned to the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush, went down around 3:30 a.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, July 1. Three of the four recovered sailors were reported in stable condition aboard the carrier, according to Fox News. Three sailors sustained injuries during the emergency landing itself.
U.S. 5th Fleet statements confirmed the end of the effort. “The efforts concluded following an extensive search by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility,” one statement said. A second noted the scale of the operation: “For more than 102 hours, an extensive and coordinated search and rescue effort spanning over 14,000 square miles was conducted.”
Military officials said there is no evidence of hostile action in the incident. The cause of the emergency landing remains under investigation.
The loss marks the 14th confirmed American service member death in the ongoing conflict with Iran, according to reporting by the New York Post. U.S. forces continue operations across a broad theater stretching from the Arabian Sea through the Strait of Hormuz and into the wider Central Command region. The campaign has included multiple encounters with Iranian forces, including the sinking of Iranian boats in the Strait of Hormuz.
