**WASHINGTON** — First Lady Melania Trump returned to the White House public stage Thursday to announce an expansion of her Fostering the Future initiative, highlighting new educational opportunities for young people aging out of the foster care system.
Opening her remarks with a lighthearted note about her relatively limited public appearances, she told the audience, “I heard you missed me. Here I am!” before turning to the substance of the event.
Appearing against a backdrop of American flags in a red, white and blue ensemble, Trump also drew attention to a nearby IndyCar decorated in patriotic colors and branded with her BE BEST and Fostering the Future initiatives. “Look at this incredible race car,” she said. “Gorgeous and powerful.”
The gathering preceded the Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C., which is expected to bring IndyCar racing to the capital. Drivers including six-time series champion Scott Dixon, 2016 Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi, Graham Rahal and Scott McLaughlin attended the White House event.
Despite the motorsports presence, the focus remained on education and opportunity. Trump announced that Fostering the Future is expanding its scholarship network to 26 colleges and universities nationwide. The program aims to help young people leaving foster care pursue higher education and build independent lives.
Fox Corporation and IndyCar each committed $1 million for scholarships at Indiana University and Purdue University, creating a combined $2 million investment. Trump also noted a recent milestone in which a scholarship recipient became the program’s first doctor. “He will change the lives of so many people,” she said.
Framing education as a lasting national investment, Trump said, “The greatest investment America can make is not in technology, infrastructure or capital markets. It’s our children.” She added that education “is the one asset that can never be taken away. It is the foundation upon which confidence is built, opportunities created and the future is invented.”
The event blended the spectacle of American racing with a message centered on service, education and support for young adults transitioning out of foster care.
