ESCONDIDO, Calif. — A Southern California Army veteran known locally for the patriotic and pro-Trump displays outside his home was in critical condition after a violent assault outside the property, authorities and family members said.
Kerry Sheron, 69, was found with severe injuries after Escondido police responded to an assault reported about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street. Officers said a person who witnessed the confrontation intervened and helped restrain the suspect until police arrived. Sheron was taken to a trauma center and treated in intensive care.
His wife, Maria Garcia, later said she feared he would not survive the injuries. A bystander who tried to stop the attack was also hurt.
Sheron’s residence, often called the “Trump House,” is covered with American flags and decorations supporting President Donald Trump and has become a familiar landmark in the neighborhood. Garcia suggested the home’s political displays may have fueled hostility toward her husband. Investigators have not publicly confirmed that politics played a role.
Police arrested Thomas Caleb Butler, 32, after he fled the area. He was charged with attempted murder and booked into the Vista Detention Facility, where he was held in custody. Authorities said he was located and arrested a short time later.
The motive remained under investigation. A person identified as a friend of Butler told local media that Butler is a Navy veteran who had struggled with serious mental-health problems, describing him as increasingly paranoid and unstable in recent months. Those claims have not been independently established by police and are not an official explanation for the attack.
The case drew political attention. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., called for a “full and immediate investigation” and raised concerns about violence against Trump supporters. Police have not announced evidence that Sheron was targeted because of his political views, his support for Trump or the decorations at his home.
Prosecutors later described the confrontation in court as beginning with a punch to Sheron’s jaw that knocked him down, followed by additional blows to the head. Detectives said they were reviewing witness accounts, physical evidence and whether the two men had any prior contact.
As Butler awaited further court proceedings, investigators continued working to establish a timeline and determine what led to the assault. For Sheron’s family, the immediate concern was his condition after the attack outside the home where he had long displayed his military service and political beliefs.
