ESCONDIDO, Calif. — A 69-year-old Army veteran known for covering his Southern California home with American flags and pro-Donald Trump memorabilia has died after a violent assault outside his residence, leading to a murder prosecution that is now moving toward trial.
Kerry George Sheron was attacked on May 20 near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street in Escondido. Police said officers found him suffering from severe injuries and he was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Sheron died four days later, on May 24.
Authorities arrested 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler shortly after the attack. He was initially charged with attempted murder, elder abuse, criminal threats and battery. After Sheron’s death, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office filed a murder charge. Prosecutors allege Butler punched Sheron, causing him to fall, and continued striking him while he was on the ground. Butler has pleaded not guilty.

Sheron’s residence had become a recognizable landmark in the neighborhood because of its extensive display of American flags, Trump flags and other political memorabilia. Local residents referred to it as the “Trump House,” while Sheron’s family described him as a strong supporter of Trump.
The political nature of the property has raised questions about whether Sheron’s beliefs or the decorations played a role in the attack. However, authorities have not established a political motive, and investigators have continued examining the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
⚖️ Case Moves Toward Trial
A witness who attempted to intervene was also involved in the confrontation, according to prosecutors and local reporting. Butler was arrested after fleeing the scene.
The case later raised questions about Butler’s mental competency. A judge ordered a psychiatric evaluation, temporarily suspending the criminal proceedings. Butler was subsequently found competent to stand trial, and prosecutors said he is scheduled to be arraigned on the murder charge on September 9.
🔎 Motive Remains a Key Question
The circumstances surrounding Sheron’s death have attracted national attention because of his highly visible political expression. But investigators have not publicly concluded that the attack was motivated by his support for Trump.
As the case proceeds, prosecutors will have to establish the facts surrounding the fatal assault and prove the allegations against Butler in court.
For Sheron’s family and community, the case follows the death of a veteran whose distinctive home had become a familiar part of the Escondido neighborhood. For investigators and prosecutors, the focus remains on evidence, motive and determining criminal responsibility through the court process.
