🚨 Ukraine Escalates Drone War as Russian Skies Face Growing Disruption

KYIV — Ukraine is intensifying its long-range drone campaign against Russia as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warns that the country’s airspace is becoming increasingly dangerous for commercial aviation — raising the stakes in a war already stretching deep beyond the front lines.

In a Sept. 1 address, Zelenskyy warned airlines, insurers and international aviation authorities that Russian airspace could effectively become closed as Ukrainian drones increasingly operate over Russian territory. He said Ukraine was targeting Russian military assets and economic infrastructure connected to the war effort, while insisting it does not intend to target civilian aircraft.

The warning comes as Ukrainian attacks have repeatedly disrupted operations at Russian airports. Moscow has defended the safety of its aviation system, while Ukrainian officials have argued that the growing number of drone incidents creates unacceptable risks for civilian flights. Russia’s transport authorities have rejected Ukraine’s assessment and said aviation operations remain under control.

The broader conflict is also entering a more dangerous phase. Russia continues launching large-scale missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. On Sept. 12, Russian strikes killed civilians and wounded dozens across several Ukrainian regions, while Kyiv reported that hundreds of drones had been launched in the latest wave of attacks.

At the same time, Ukraine has continued striking targets inside Russia, including facilities it says are connected to Moscow’s military-industrial capabilities. The expanding reach of these attacks has increasingly turned Russian territory and airspace into another battlefield.

Zelenskyy has also linked the drone campaign directly to diplomacy, saying Ukraine would consider temporary pauses in certain areas if international partners request them to support negotiations. His message was blunt: the war cannot continue indefinitely, and pressure on Russia’s skies could become part of the effort to force movement toward peace.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts are continuing. U.S. envoys have recently met officials in both Moscow and Kyiv, with discussions focused on restarting trilateral negotiations. Ukrainian officials say talks could resume in October, although major disagreements remain unresolved.

With attacks continuing on both sides and diplomacy struggling to produce a breakthrough, Russia’s skies are becoming an increasingly important front in the war — with consequences extending far beyond the battlefield.
