STOCKTON, Calif. — What was supposed to be a joyful birthday celebration for a young child ended in unimaginable tragedy when gunfire erupted at a family gathering in the Stockton area, killing four people and wounding 13 others.
The shooting occurred Saturday evening at a banquet hall near Lucile Avenue, where roughly 100 to 150 people had gathered for a child’s birthday party. According to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, 15 people were initially confirmed to have suffered gunshot wounds, including four who died. Two additional victims later sought medical treatment, bringing the number of wounded to 13.
Among those killed were three children and one adult. Authorities identified the victims as ages 8, 9, 14 and 21. The tragedy has left families and residents confronting the devastating reality that a gathering intended for children and relatives became the scene of deadly violence.
A Celebration Suddenly Becomes Chaos
Witness accounts described a rapid transformation from an ordinary birthday gathering into a frantic scramble for safety.
The party had been filled with families and children when shots suddenly rang out. Guests rushed for cover, while parents and relatives tried to protect children and help those who had been wounded.
Investigators later determined that the shooting appeared to have begun inside the building before continuing outside. Authorities also said they were investigating the possibility that multiple shooters were involved.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office said early indications suggested the shooting may have been targeted, but investigators continued examining evidence and multiple possible explanations.
Community Left Reeling
The aftermath was marked by a chaotic crime scene, with party decorations and belongings left behind as investigators processed evidence.
Local residents and community leaders expressed shock that such violence could unfold during a child’s birthday celebration. The setting — a family event involving children — has intensified the emotional impact across Stockton.
Authorities appealed to anyone who witnessed the shooting, recorded video or possesses information that could help investigators to come forward. Investigators have emphasized that cellphone footage, witness accounts and other information from the public could prove important in identifying those responsible.
The investigation remains active. Authorities have continued reviewing evidence and pursuing leads as they work to determine exactly what happened and identify those responsible.
For families affected by the shooting, however, the investigation is more than a criminal case. It is the search for answers after a birthday celebration became a night of mourning — leaving four families grieving and many others waiting for healing and justice.
