WASHINGTON — A lavish wedding celebration involving Donald Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina Trump, has become the subject of congressional scrutiny after investigative reporting revealed that Russian businessman Umar Kremlev financed major portions of their post-wedding festivities in the Bahamas.
According to ProPublica, Kremlev, president of the International Boxing Association, spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on expenses connected to the celebrations, including the rental of a private island and other major event costs. Records reviewed by the publication indicated that payments were made through an entity affiliated with the boxing organization and based in Dubai.
The Trump family has acknowledged Kremlev’s involvement but characterized the money as a personal wedding gift rather than a political or business arrangement.
Bettina Trump described Kremlev as a friend and said he generously hosted two nights of celebrations following the private wedding ceremony. The couple emphasized that Kremlev did not finance the actual wedding ceremony itself, but rather celebrations held afterward.

Trump Jr. and Bettina were married in May during a private ceremony in the Bahamas. The wedding weekend continued across two private islands, with additional receptions and celebrations.
ProPublica reported that Kremlev paid for multiple nights at a private island that can reportedly cost roughly $100,000 per night. The festivities also included a major fireworks display and other expensive arrangements.
Kremlev’s relationship with the Russian government has intensified scrutiny of the arrangement. He heads the International Boxing Association, an organization that has received financing from Russian state energy giant Gazprom, and he has appeared alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Washington Post also reported that Kremlev recently accompanied Putin on a delegation to China.
President Donald Trump has said he did not know Kremlev and stressed that the businessman did not pay for his son’s wedding ceremony. Trump described the funded events as celebrations held separately from the actual wedding.
⚖️ House Oversight Inquiry
The revelations prompted Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, to open an inquiry into the financial arrangement.
Garcia requested records concerning Trump Jr.’s communications with Kremlev, financial transactions related to the celebrations and communications involving the White House. The inquiry also seeks information about other foreign gifts received by Trump Jr.
The congressional inquiry itself does not establish that any law was violated. It is focused on gathering records and determining the circumstances surrounding the foreign-funded celebrations.
🔎 Repayment Changes the Story
The controversy took another turn Friday, September 18, when President Trump said his son had repaid Kremlev for the expenses.
Trump told reporters that the arrangement was “totally allowed” and said he understood that Trump Jr. had paid the money back. The Washington Post and Reuters also reported the repayment or reimbursement following the initial disclosure.
The repayment comes as congressional investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the original payments.
For now, the central facts remain clear: Kremlev financed significant portions of Trump Jr.’s Bahamas celebrations, the couple publicly acknowledged his role, congressional Democrats opened an inquiry, and President Trump says his son has since repaid the Russian businessman.
The House investigation could determine whether additional financial records, communications or relationships are relevant to the controversy.
