MADISON, Wis. — A 15-year-old student opened fire at Abundant Life Christian School on Dec. 16, 2024, killing a teacher and a classmate and wounding six others before dying of a self-inflicted gunshot. Officers did not fire. The private K-12 campus on Madison’s east side was in the last week of classes before Christmas break.
A second-grade teacher called 911 at 10:57 a.m. Police began arriving about three minutes later. First reports said five people were dead. Officials later corrected the count: two homicide victims, the shooter, and six injured. Two of the wounded were initially listed in life-threatening condition.
The Dane County Medical Examiner identified the dead as Erin M. West, 42, of DeForest, the school’s substitute coordinator and a teacher there for four years, and Rubi P. Vergara, 14, a Madison freshman who had attended Abundant Life since kindergarten. Both died of gunshot wounds. Police identified the shooter as Natalie Lynn “Samantha” Rupnow, 15, a student at the school. She died at a hospital. Investigators later described the motive as a mix of factors, including what they characterized as nihilistic violent extremism. The inquiry continued. Rupnow’s father, Jeffrey Rupnow, was later charged in state court with supplying a dangerous weapon to a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Those charges are separate from the shooting itself.
Parents jammed nearby streets. A reunification site was set up so children could be matched with families. The school locked down while detectives worked classrooms and interviewed students and staff. Chief Shon F. Barnes said the first officers found victims in a study-hall classroom and at least one other adult wounded nearby.
The city that night was a familiar American scene: cameras outside a small school, a church parking lot used as a gathering point, and a community trying to name two people instead of a statistic. West’s colleagues described a teacher who worked “with the love of Jesus.” Vergara’s family remembered a reader and artist who sang and played keyboard in a family worship band.
School shootings reopen the same national arguments about access to guns, warning signs, and campus security. For Abundant Life the first job was narrower: hospitals, funerals, and children who had to walk back into a building that was no longer only a school. The scars Chief Barnes and pastors described that week were not theoretical. Two families buried their dead. Six others left the building wounded. A third teenager did not leave it alive.
