ARABIAN SEA — The U.S. Navy has identified Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards, the commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5, as the sailor who went missing after an MH-60S Seahawk made an emergency landing in the Arabian Sea on July 1.
Edwards, a native of Oakland, Oregon, was one of four crew members aboard the helicopter. Three sailors were rescued following the incident, but Edwards was not recovered. After more than 102 hours of continuous search-and-rescue operations covering more than 14,000 square miles, the Navy suspended its active search on July 5.
🌊 Massive Search Effort
The search involved ships and aircraft from multiple Navy carrier strike groups, P-8A Poseidon patrol aircraft and U.S. Air Force assets operating across the Arabian Sea.
The Navy said there was no indication that hostile action caused the emergency, while the circumstances surrounding the helicopter’s landing remain under investigation.
The incident has drawn renewed attention because of the dangerous operating environment in the region, where U.S. forces have been conducting missions amid heightened tensions involving Iran.
🇺🇸 A Two-Decade Naval Career
Edwards joined the Navy through the Naval ROTC program after graduating from Norfolk State University in 2006. He earned his naval aviator wings in 2008 and went on to serve with several helicopter squadrons and specialized military units.
He assumed command of HSC-5, known as the “Nightdippers,” in July 2025. Navy officials described him as a dedicated leader who had devoted approximately two decades to military service.
His awards included the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He had also been selected for promotion to captain.
💔 Family Remembers a Husband and Father
Edwards leaves behind his wife, Rebecca, and two children.
In a statement released through the Navy, Rebecca expressed gratitude to the sailors, aviators and airmen who spent hours searching for her husband.
Navy leaders also offered condolences to the Edwards family, remembering him as a husband, father, friend and commanding officer whose leadership left a lasting impression on his squadron.
⚠️ Investigation Continues
Despite the extensive search, Edwards was not found. Officials have not publicly disclosed what caused the helicopter to make the emergency landing, and the Navy continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
For now, the loss of a senior Navy aviator has left his family, fellow sailors and squadron members mourning while questions remain about what happened in the Arabian Sea.
