WASHINGTON — A high-profile night of politics and journalism turned into a security emergency Saturday when an armed man allegedly charged through a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, forcing President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and other senior officials to evacuate.
The April 25 incident unfolded shortly after the dinner began, sending guests scrambling for cover as gunfire erupted near the ballroom. Trump was unharmed and was quickly moved from the area by Secret Service agents.
🚨 Suspect Charged in Alleged Attack
Federal authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California.
According to the Justice Department, Allen allegedly approached a Secret Service screening checkpoint, sprinted through a magnetometer and headed toward the stairs leading to the ballroom where Trump was located. Prosecutors allege that he was armed with a 12-gauge shotgun and other weapons.
A Secret Service officer was struck in the chest by a bullet but was protected by his ballistic vest and survived. Allen was taken into custody after the confrontation.
Federal prosecutors later charged Allen with attempting to assassinate the president, along with federal firearms offenses.
🇺🇸 Trump and Officials Evacuated
As the shooting unfolded, Secret Service personnel immediately moved Trump and other protected officials away from the danger.
Vice President Vance was among the first officials removed from the stage, followed shortly afterward by Trump and Melania Trump. Other senior administration officials were also taken to secure locations as law enforcement cleared the area.
The annual dinner was ultimately canceled, ending an event that had brought together hundreds of journalists, government officials and public figures.

Investigators have been examining Allen’s movements, writings and preparations leading up to the incident.
Court documents indicate Allen had reserved a room at the Washington Hilton weeks before the dinner and traveled from California to Washington by train. Prosecutors have also presented evidence concerning his movements around the hotel before the shooting.
Authorities are investigating evidence that prosecutors say indicates the attack was directed at Trump and other senior administration officials.
