**Secretary of State Marco Rubio has described an unusual episode aboard Air Force One in which he and other senior officials spent roughly 90 minutes debating whether a motionless passenger might be dead.**
Rubio recounted the incident during an appearance on the Katie Miller Podcast. The episode occurred on a flight returning from China. According to Rubio, an unidentified person remained completely still in a conference room despite surrounding activity, noise and attempts at stimulation.
“We spent about 90 minutes sort of debating should we make a move?” Rubio said. “Should I call the doc? Should we deal with this?”
Officials hesitated, he explained, because waking someone who was simply in a deep sleep risked creating an awkward moment. “Because it’s embarrassing if you wake them up,” Rubio said, imagining the person responding that they had merely been resting. The alternative scenario, however, carried more serious implications. “But if they were dead, like what do you do? You have a dead body on the plane.”
Rubio noted that the individual had slept through significant noise and showed no response to external stimuli. He also observed that “the breathing pattern was difficult,” heightening the group’s concern. Despite those worries, no one summoned the onboard physician or attempted to wake the person during the extended discussion.
The situation resolved itself without intervention. “Luckily, the person was fine,” Rubio said.
He did not identify the individual involved, and no other official has publicly confirmed the person’s identity. That omission quickly fueled speculation on social media, including lighthearted suggestions naming various public figures. There is no evidence supporting any of those claims.
The anecdote drew additional notice because of a related exchange roughly a month earlier. During a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, Democratic California Rep. Ted Lieu asked Rubio whether he had witnessed President Donald Trump fall asleep in more than one meeting. Rubio replied that he had never seen the president sleep and added that Trump “doesn’t sleep, which is a big problem,” citing the president’s early-morning outreach to aides. Lieu disputed the answer and said he possessed video from a cabinet meeting that he believed showed Trump with his eyes closed while Rubio was speaking. Rubio maintained his position, and no formal congressional action has followed.
The precise date of the Air Force One flight, the other officials present and the identity of the deep sleeper remain undisclosed. Rubio, for his part, recounted the episode with evident amusement once it became clear no medical emergency had occurred.
