ARABIAN SEA — The U.S. Navy has ended an extensive search for a sailor who disappeared after an MH-60S Seahawk helicopter went down in the Arabian Sea, bringing more than four days of continuous search-and-rescue operations to a close.
The Navy suspended the active search at 3 p.m. local time on July 5, after more than 102 hours of operations covering more than 14,000 square miles of open ocean. Despite the deployment of ships, helicopters, maritime patrol aircraft and other military assets, search teams were unable to locate the missing sailor.
Two days later, the Navy identified the missing service member as Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards, commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5, known as the “Nightdippers.” Edwards was reported missing following the July 1 emergency landing involving an MH-60S helicopter assigned to his squadron and deployed aboard the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush.

The search effort involved forces from multiple U.S. Navy and Air Force units operating across a vast section of the Arabian Sea.
Among the assets committed were aircraft and personnel from two carrier strike groups, multiple helicopter squadrons, P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, guided-missile destroyers and U.S. Air Force aircraft. The operation continued around the clock as crews searched thousands of square miles of open water.
Four other crew members survived the helicopter incident. The Navy has not released detailed information about the circumstances surrounding the emergency landing.
⚓ Cause Remains Under Investigation
The Navy has emphasized that there is no indication the emergency was caused by hostile action.
Officials have not publicly attributed the incident to mechanical failure, weather or any other specific factor. The circumstances surrounding the helicopter emergency remain under investigation.
🕊️ Remembering Cmdr. Edwards
Edwards had accumulated more than 2,000 flight hours across several helicopter platforms and assumed command of HSC-5 in July 2025. He was also selected for promotion to captain by the Fiscal Year 2027 O-6 Line Officer Promotion Board.
Navy officials described Edwards as a dedicated leader whose service left a lasting impact on his squadron and fellow sailors. His family and the Navy community have received an outpouring of support following the incident.
Mental-health professionals, chaplains and other support personnel are assisting HSC-5 sailors and the crew of the USS George H.W. Bush as they cope with the loss.
While the active search has ended, the Navy’s investigation into the helicopter emergency continues.
