The alleged exchange has not been independently confirmed. Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace have not commented. Any account of what father and son said to each other therefore remains unverified and should be treated with caution.
What is not in dispute is the weight of the past. William was 15 when his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, died in a car crash in Paris in August 1997. The funeral that followed became one of the defining images of the modern monarchy. William and his younger brother, Prince Harry, walked behind her coffin in front of a global audience. For the public it looked like duty. For two grieving boys it was loss performed under intense scrutiny.
The brothers later took different paths. William stayed inside the institution and is now heir to the throne.
