LONDON — Remarks by U.S. Vice President JD Vance about the military capabilities of European countries have reignited criticism in Britain, where politicians and veterans said his comments appeared to overlook the sacrifices made by British forces alongside American troops.
The controversy began in March 2025, when Vance discussed proposals for European countries to provide security guarantees for Ukraine following a potential peace agreement. He questioned the value of deploying 20,000 troops from what he described as a “random country” that had not fought a war in decades.
The comments drew a sharp response from British political figures, particularly because Britain and France had extensive combat experience alongside U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. British Conservative lawmaker James Cartlidge called the remarks deeply disrespectful, while former Armed Forces Minister Johnny Mercer, an Afghanistan veteran, also criticized Vance.
The dispute soon focused on the human cost of Britain’s post-9/11 military campaigns. British officials highlighted the hundreds of service members killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, emphasizing that British and American forces frequently served together during those operations.
The issue also touched on the broader U.S.-UK defense relationship, which has developed through decades of cooperation within NATO, including joint operations, intelligence sharing, training and military planning.
Vance later rejected the suggestion that he had specifically been criticizing Britain or France. He said it was “absurdly dishonest” to claim that his remarks referred to either country, noting that both had fought alongside U.S. forces for many years.
Vance said his criticism was aimed more broadly at potential European contributors that might volunteer for a future security mission without possessing sufficient military experience or equipment. His clarification did little to immediately quiet criticism in Britain.
The episode came as European governments debated whether they could contribute troops to a potential postwar security arrangement in Ukraine. Britain and France were among the countries publicly discussing the possibility of deploying forces if a ceasefire were reached.
Beyond the political disagreement, the controversy highlighted the sensitivity surrounding military service and battlefield sacrifice. For veterans and families who lost relatives in Iraq and Afghanistan, comments about military capability can carry significance well beyond questions of strategy.
The dispute ultimately underscored a continuing challenge for the transatlantic alliance: balancing demands for greater European responsibility with recognition of the military contributions already made by longstanding U.S. allies.
