WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Marco Rubio has revealed an unusual incident aboard Air Force One in which he and other officials spent roughly 90 minutes trying to determine whether an unresponsive passenger was simply sleeping or experiencing a medical emergency.
Rubio recounted the episode during an appearance on The Katie Miller Podcast, describing a return flight from China. According to Rubio, an unidentified person was lying on a couch inside the aircraft’s conference room and appeared to be sleeping unusually deeply.
But as the minutes passed, concern grew.
Rubio said he could not clearly see the person’s chest moving or establish a consistent breathing pattern. Despite noise and lights inside the aircraft, the individual reportedly did not respond.
That left officials facing an awkward decision: wake the person and risk discovering they were simply sleeping—or seek medical assistance in case something was seriously wrong.
“We spent about 90 minutes” debating whether to act, Rubio said. He described the possibility of discovering that the person had died as an especially troubling scenario aboard the presidential aircraft.
Eventually, the mystery was resolved without intervention. Rubio said the individual woke up and was fine.
The secretary of state did not identify the person, and no official source has publicly confirmed the individual’s identity. Speculation circulating online about who the passenger may have been has not been substantiated.
The story has drawn attention because of the unusual circumstances and Rubio’s description of officials debating how to respond to someone who appeared completely unresponsive.
For Rubio, what initially looked like a potential emergency ultimately became an extraordinary story from a government flight.
