DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — What began as a routine international flight from Thiruvananthapuram, India, to Dubai ended in a dramatic runway emergency on August 3, 2016, when Emirates Flight EK521 crash-landed at Dubai International Airport and caught fire.
The Boeing 777-300 was carrying 282 passengers and 18 crew members when the aircraft came down at approximately 12:45 p.m. local time. Despite the severity of the accident, everyone aboard the aircraft was evacuated safely.
🔥 Landing Turns Into a Fireball
The aircraft, registered as A6-EMW, had been operating from Thiruvananthapuram International Airport to Dubai. During the landing sequence, the aircraft failed to complete a normal touchdown and came to rest on the runway before a major fire developed.

Several people were treated for injuries, with Emirates reporting that five passengers were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries. One cabin crew member was also hospitalized after the accident but was reported to be in good condition.

The crash had an immediate impact on operations at one of the world’s busiest airports. Dubai International Airport was closed for approximately six hours as emergency crews dealt with the wreckage and fire.
Emirates said 27 of its flights were canceled and 23 flights were diverted to alternative airports, affecting more than 23,000 passengers across the airline’s network. Operations gradually resumed at about 6:30 p.m. local time.

Following the accident, Emirates said it was cooperating fully with aviation authorities to determine what caused the crash.
