STOCKTON, Calif. — A Saturday birthday party for a young child ended in one of this city’s gravest recent tragedies after gunfire erupted at a residential gathering, killing at least four people and injuring at least ten others, authorities and witnesses said.
The afternoon had been ordinary in the way neighborhood parties are ordinary: balloons, cake, music, children in the yard, adults nearby. Neighbors said they first heard what they took for fireworks. The sound came too fast and too loud. Parents pulled children down, covered them, and ran for the house or for cars along the street. A celebration became a scramble for cover.
